Why the cut misses by a different amount on every source
Video is stored in groups of pictures. Each group opens with a keyframe, a complete image that decodes on its own, and everything after it describes only what changed. A copied cut must begin on one of those keyframes, so the distance it misses by is simply how far back the nearest one sits. Phone cameras typically place one every one to two seconds; screen recorders and files prepared for streaming often stretch the gap to five or ten.
Nothing in the filename tells you which you have, so cut fast first and look at the result. If it starts where you asked, the groups were short and re-encoding gains nothing. If it starts a beat early, decide whether the beat matters: for a clip watched straight through it rarely does, but for a first frame carrying a title card, a face, or the still that becomes a thumbnail, it does.
What a frame-accurate cut actually costs
Precise mode stops copying and starts rebuilding. Every frame in range is decoded and compressed again from scratch, so the output is a fresh encode carrying one more generation of loss. On a clean camera original that generation is invisible. On footage already squeezed hard by a social platform there is less headroom to hide in, and blocking around fast motion can become noticeable.
The useful asymmetry is that this cost scales with the clip, not the file: a fifteen-second precise cut from an hour-long recording re-encodes fifteen seconds. What does scale with the file is memory, since the whole thing sits in the tab while the tool works. That is the real ceiling, and the reason a multi-gigabyte recording is not a realistic input to a browser however patient you are.
Questions
Is my video uploaded to trim it?
No. The trimming runs on an engine that loads into your browser, so the video is processed on your device and never sent to a server. Most free "cut video" sites upload your file — which matters if it is personal.
What is the difference between Fast and Precise?
Fast copies the clip without re-encoding: it is instant and loses no quality, but because a copy can only begin on a keyframe, the start can land up to a second or two early. Precise re-encodes the clip so the cut is exactly where you set it — slightly slower, and the video is re-compressed.
Why does my fast cut start a moment before where I set it?
A lossless copy has to begin on a keyframe — a self-contained frame the video stores every few seconds. The cut snaps back to the nearest one so the clip is playable from the first frame. Use Precise mode when the exact start frame matters.
Does trimming reduce the quality?
In Fast mode, no — the clip is copied byte-for-byte, so it is identical to the source. Precise mode re-encodes, which is a small, usually invisible quality change in exchange for a frame-accurate cut.
How big a video can it handle?
Up to about 500 MB. The file is held in your browser's memory while it is cut, so very large videos can strain a phone.
