Fourteen to the stone, and the pounds figure never reaches fourteen

A stone is fourteen pounds, so eleven stone four is 158 lb. The notation is positional rather than decimal: the second number runs from 0 to 13, and eleven stone fourteen is not a weight anyone writes, because it is twelve stone. Reading 11 4 as eleven point four is the mistake that produces an answer six pounds out.

The base-14 arithmetic is precisely why the unit survives conversationally and nowhere official. Fourteen has no useful relationship to ten, so stones cannot be scaled, halved cleanly or averaged in the head; they can only be counted. Britain and Ireland kept them anyway, for body weight and nothing else.

Pounds are what everyone outside Britain will accept

The United States uses pounds without stones at all, so an American hearing eleven stone four takes nothing from it, while 158 lb is immediately legible. Fitness apps, US medical intake forms and international weight classes all expect the single figure.

Two British contexts keep both units in play at once. Boxing sets its limits in pounds - the cruiserweight ceiling is 200 lb - while the commentary around it talks in stones; and British horse racing publishes handicap weights as stones and pounds, so a horse carrying 9 st 7 lb is carrying 133 lb, saddle and all.
