Convert megabytes to gigabytes
Type a number and see it converted as you type. 1 megabyte = 0.001 gigabytes, so the conversion is simply × 0.001.
The formula
gigabytes = megabytes × 0.001

Files that add up to a full drive on paper and not on the device
This tool works in decimal gigabytes: 1,000 MB each, the definition every drive and phone manufacturer prints on the box. Windows counts in binary, 1,073,741,824 bytes to what it still labels "GB", so a total reading 100 GB here shows as roughly 93 GB there. Neither figure is wrong; they answer slightly different questions about the same bytes.
That 7.4% is why a set of files sized in a spreadsheet can be declared to fit and then not fit. macOS and Linux both moved to decimal reporting years ago, so files copied from a Mac to a Windows machine appear to change size in transit despite every byte arriving intact. Check which side produced the megabyte figures before trusting the total.
Media libraries are the last place megabytes still add up to something
Photographs from a modern phone run three to five megabytes each, RAW files ten times that, and an hour of 4K footage lands somewhere past 40 GB. Working in megabytes stays natural right up to the moment the answer has to be compared against a storage tier or a drive, which are always sold in gigabytes and terabytes.
Cloud plans compound the problem. A 15 GB free allowance is decimal, but the client syncing into it may count what it uploaded in binary, and shared albums, trash and version history consume the quota without appearing as files. Convert to gigabytes to see the headroom, then leave a margin: a quota that fills stops syncing everything, not merely the file that overflowed it.
Questions
How many gigabytes are in 1 megabyte?
1 megabyte = 0.001 gigabytes. To convert any amount, multiply by 0.001.
What is the formula to convert megabytes to gigabytes?
gigabytes = megabytes × 0.001. That is exactly what the calculator above does, so you can check its working.
Is the conversion exact?
It depends on what you mean by "kilo". This tool uses the decimal SI convention (1 KB = 1000 bytes), the one storage manufacturers use. Operating systems often use 1024 instead, which is why a drive reports less space than the box promises.
