Convert kilojoules to kilocalories
Type a number and see it converted as you type. 1 kilojoule = 0.239006 kilocalories, so the conversion is simply × 0.23900574.
The formula
kilocalories = kilojoules × 0.23900574

Kilojoules are the legal figure; kilocalories are the one people think in
EU labels list energy in kilojoules first and kilocalories second, while Australian and New Zealand packaging often shows kilojoules alone. A snack at 1,200 kJ means little to anyone raised counting calories, and the conversion is what makes it comparable: that snack is 287 kcal, which reads immediately as a substantial one rather than a light bite.
Dividing by four is the mental shortcut, and it is close enough for a supermarket aisle. The true divisor is 4.184, fixed by the thermochemical definition rather than measured, so the shortcut overstates by about 4.5%. Across a full day that is a hundred calories or so — irrelevant when shopping, less so when a total is being tracked deliberately.
The calorie this converts to is the big one
The result is kilocalories, and a kilocalorie is precisely what a food label means by "calorie". Both words describe the same quantity; the label just drops the prefix. An app or table asking for calories wants this number unchanged, and multiplying by a thousand to reach small calories produces a figure no nutrition tool anywhere expects to receive.
One caution about the input. Manufacturers calculate energy by applying Atwater factors to protein, fat and carbohydrate content rather than by burning the food, and legal tolerances of up to 20% apply to declared values. The conversion is exact; the figure being converted is a good estimate, which is worth remembering before tuning a diet to the nearest kilojoule.
Questions
How many kilocalories are in 1 kilojoule?
1 kilojoule = 0.239006 kilocalories. To convert any amount, multiply by 0.23900574.
What is the formula to convert kilojoules to kilocalories?
kilocalories = kilojoules × 0.23900574. That is exactly what the calculator above does, so you can check its working.
Is the conversion exact?
Yes. Note only that the calorie here is the thermochemical calorie (4.184 J), and that the "calories" on food labels are actually kilocalories.
Anything to watch out for with kilocalories?
The 'calorie' on a food label is really a kilocalorie — 1000 of the physicist's calories.
